Horses today

To a greater extent nowadays, horses and ponies are used primarily in recreational pursuits. They provide pleasure to people of all riding abilities and levels, and from all walks of life, from simple pony trekking holidays to international level competitions. It is interesting to note, as just one example of how the horse's role in society has changed, how the Oldenburgh and Hanoverian breeds, which were once most sought after as carriage horses, are now highly popular as competition and riding horses. A large amount of time and money goes into breeding top-rate competition and race horses, and it is every breeder's dream to produce the ultimate equine winner.
